RF Switch type definition:

  • Hardware:

    A Hardware RF Switch is a switch or toggle button that works by itself and doesn't need a kernel driver or userspace application to make it work.

  • Software

    A Software RF Switch is a switch or toggle button that requires a kernel driver or userspace application to make it work. Some laptops may not have a specific switch/button but still have the hardware part that controls the wireless radio state and can still be made to work with software.

Acer Aspire 1640Z Hardware and Software To use the software switch, use the acerhk module: 
modprobe acerhk
echo 1 > /proc/driver/acerhk/wirelessled
To make the LED on the wireless button work, you need to pass the module parameter led=1 to the ipw2200 module, editing /etc/modprobe.d/ipw2200 or /etc/modprobe.conf and adding a line: 
options ipw2200 led=1
If the module is already loaded you need to reload it: 
modprobe -r ipw2200 ; modprobe ipw2200
Acer Aspire 1690 Hardware and Software To use the software switch, use the acerhk module (supported since version 0.5.25): 
modprobe acerhk
echo 1 > /proc/driver/acerhk/wirelessled

Acer TravelMate 290 Software If you're using an ipw2100 it will work with acerhk, but if you're using a different/newer card (ex: ipw2915, Atheros, Z-com) you will have to do this procedure:
  • Remove the miniPCI card from the slot.
  • Get some tape to isolate pins 11 and 13 (these are right next to the antennas' contacts) which are really pins 6 and 7 because the pins' numbering is done alternating sides on the card.
  • Put the card back on the slot.

If you have problems with ndiswrapper and an Intel PRO/Wireless 2200 do the following:
  • Turn the RF switch ON and see the led ON before loading ndiswrapper.
  • Load ndiswrapper.
  • Turn the RF switch OFF, and then ON again.
or get the latest ndiswrapper from CVS.
